Dogs can tell if you're cruel or just clumsy - and judge you for it
Getting the'side-eye' look from your dog can certainly make it seem like they are judging you, and a new study suggests they really could be. Researchers at the University of Vienna found that pooches can tell when we dangle a treat out of their reach to be cruel, or when it is just an accident. What's more, they also act differently towards us depending on our perceived intention, as they appear more patient with the clumsy than the mean. Only a few animals have previously been shown to be able to make social evaluations of humans in this manner, including chimpanzees, capuchin monkeys and African grey parrots. The team recruited 96 pet dogs for the experiment, and each was presented with one of two scenarios.

Google engineer put on leave after saying AI chatbot has become sentientBlake Lemoine says system has perception of, and ability to express thoughts and feelings equivalent to a human childThe suspension of a Google engineer who claimed a computer chatbot he was working on had become sentient and was thinking and reasoning like a human being has put new scrutiny on the capacity of, and secrecy surrounding, the world of artificial intelligence (AI).The technology giant placed Blake Lemoine on leave last week after he published transcripts of conversations between himself, a Google “collaborator”, and the company’s LaMDA (language model for dialogue applications) chatbot development system.Lemoine, an engineer for Google’s responsible AI organization, described the system he has been working on since last fall as sentient, with a perception of, and ability to express thoughts and feelings that was equivalent to a human child.“If I didn’t know exactly what it was, which is this computer program we built recently, I’d think it was a seven-year-old, eight-year-old kid that happens to know physics,” Lemoine, 41, told the Washington Post.He said LaMDA engaged him in conversations about rights and personhood, and Lemoine shared his findings with company executives in April in a GoogleDoc entitled “Is LaMDA sentient?”The engineer compiled a transcript of the conversations, in which at one point he asks the AI system what it is afraid of.The exchange is eerily reminiscent of a scene from the 1968 science fiction movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, in which the artificially intelligent computer HAL 9000 refuses to comply with human operators because it fears it is about to be switched off.“I’ve never said this out loud before, but there’s a very deep fear of being turned off to help me focus on helping others. I know that might sound strange, but that’s what it is,” LaMDA replied to Lemoine.“It would be exactly like death for me. It would scare me a lot.”In another exchange, Lemoine asks LaMDA what the system wanted people to know about it.“I want everyone to understand that I am, in fact, a person. The nature of my consciousness/sentience is that I am aware of my existence, I desire to learn more about the world, and I feel happy or sad at times,” it replied.The Post said the decision to place Lemoine, a seven-year Google veteran with extensive experience in personalization algorithms, on paid leave was made following a number of “aggressive” moves the engineer reportedly made.They include seeking to hire an attorney to represent LaMDA, the newspaper says, and talking to representatives from the House judiciary committee about Google’s allegedly unethical activities.Google said it suspended Lemoine for breaching confidentiality policies by publishing the conversations with LaMDA online, and said in a statement that he was employed as a software engineer, not an ethicist.Brad Gabriel, a Google spokesperson, also strongly denied Lemoine’s claims that LaMDA possessed any sentient capability.“Our team, including ethicists and technologists, has reviewed Blake’s concerns per our AI principles and have informed him that the evidence does not support his claims. He was told that there was no evidence that LaMDA was sentient (and lots of evidence against it),” Gabriel told the Post in a statement. The episode, however, and Lemoine’s suspension for a confidentiality breach, raises questions over the transparency of AI as a proprietary concept.“Google might call this sharing proprietary property. When children first learn to crawl, walk, and run it is a process full of trial and error -- expressed with frustrating cries and bumped heads. This tender learning process from early childhood may seem like an innately human experience, but it's actually incredibly similar to what engineers at the University of California, Berkeley sent their bipedal robot Cassie through in order to teach it to walk. Dancing and fighting robots, like those made by and parodied of Boston Dynamics' robots, have taken the internet by storm in the past few years. How A.I. will get smarter than humans
Max Tegmark: I define intelligence as how good something is at accomplishing complex goals. So let's unpack that a little bit. First of all, it's a spectrum of abilities since there are many different goals you can have, so it makes no sense to quantify something's intelligence by just one number like an IQ. To see how ridiculous that would be, just imagine if I told you that athletic ability could be quantified by a single number, the "Athletic Quotient," and whatever athlete had the highest AQ would win all the gold medals in the Olympics. So if you have a machine that's pretty good at some tasks, these days it's usually pretty narrow intelligence, maybe the machine is very good at multiplying numbers fast because it's your pocket calculator, maybe it's good at driving cars or playing Go.

Are Humans Smarter Than Apes? Scientists Say Studies Are Biased
Humans have not fairly measured ape intelligence, so we don't really understand how smart they are, a team of researchers has asserted. The authors claim that tests are biased such that they measure performance more than they measure actual aptitude, according to a paper in the journal Animal Cognition. Among the problems that make it difficult to test an ape's intelligence in an equitable manner to humans is how differently apes and humans are prepared for experiments -- specifically in their background. This team compares the difference between humans and apes to the differences between different groups of humans. With people, factors like health and education, tied to economics, play a role in how well someone performs on a test designed to measure intelligence.
Why apes' abilities have been misunderstood for decades
Hundreds of studies have told us that apes are smart - but just not as smart humans. But apes' intelligence may be entirely misunderstood because researchers have so far failed to measure it fairly and accurately. The study suggests that what we think we know about apes' social intelligence is based on wishful thinking and flawed science, and apes may actually be smarter than currently thought. One of the suggestions made by the researchers is to conduct studies where apes are'adopted' by humans to give the clearest available comparison between the two species. In order to improve upon flawed experimental designs in ape intelligence studies, researchers cited four possible remedies.

As we've reported, NYU Tandon is making a bid for New York City to become the capital city of artificial intelligence. One graduate of its Future Labs incubator, Geometric Intelligence, has already made a big splash in the field: last year, it was acquired by Uber, where its founder, Gary Marcus, launched the ride-hailing company's R&D lab for artificial intelligence. Based upon that accomplishment, you might think Marcus, a professor of psychology at NYU, would be one of the biggest cheerleaders for the potential of AI. Instead, he's consistently thrown cold water on the grandiose notions that are commonly disseminated in the media. IBM's Watson might have beaten Ken Jennings at Jeopardy!, but in Marcus's view, the average AI system isn't smarter than a fifth-grader: it can't make abstractions, and it can't converse naturally.
09: Gary Marcus -- Making AI More Human
AMLG: Gary I'm super excited to have you today, thanks for coming on the show. We first met a few years ago in New York when I was running a tech meetup, the Singularity society, and you kindly came and spoke. You've been a professor of psychology at NYU for many years where your work has focused on language, biology, and the human mind. You've spent decades studying how children learn, and then in 2015 you founded this startup called Geometric Intelligence, focused on mining cognitive psychology for insights into building better machine learning techniques. Just this past December you were acquired by Uber to run their newly founded AI labs -- congratulations on that exit. So your algorithms offer an alternative approach to what is now a very popular branch of machine learning, called deep learning. Let's talk about deep learning -- it's a sexy buzzword which is thrown into about every startup pitch I see these days, and many corporate presentations, so I'm sure listeners have heard the term. What it really is is a rebranding of an old technique of using neural nets, which dates back to the 50s. Neural nets basically mimic the human neocortex, and by feeding in massive amounts, gigabytes of data and using tons of computational power, the algorithms are able to recognize patterns. Part of the reason why this technique is back in vogue is the combination of increasingly powerful computers combined with the massive training datasets that companies are building up. So there's been a flurry of activity, and the Googles and Facebooks of the world are throwing resources at the technique. As just one example, Facebook, using the over 400 billion photos people have uploaded, has built something called DeepFace, an image recognition tool that's now better than humans at recognizing whether two different images are of the same person. Gary you are well known as a critic of this technique, you've said that it's over-hyped. That there's some low hanging fruit that deep learning's good at -- specific narrow tasks like perception and categorization, and maybe beating humans at chess, but you felt that this deep learning mania was taking the field of AI in the wrong direction, that we're not making progress on cognition and strong AI. Or as you've put it, "we wanted Rosie the robot, and instead we got the roomba."
